General Productions based this independent film on Lewis Carrolls' original book, which portrays a much darker story than most movie-makers care to produce. ALICE UNDERGROUND features a new cinematic style, certain to rouse the viewers senses as they join one woman on her journey through the streets of Manhattan. The film-making technique is certainly unusual, the whole thing being shot entirely as a series of thousands of 35mm digital still photographs which were then transferred in sequence to videotape. Various optical effects were possible this way, fading from from frame-to-frame, merging and combining frames over time, and distorting the time frame itself. The film owes as much to the theatre, rock videos and commercials as it does to traditional cinema.
