Rumour has it that Disney tried to delay the release of this film for fear it would interfere with their own production. I don't think they need to have worried. Even taken in the context of it's time and the fact it was probably aimed specifically at young children, it's no competition. The problem is maybe that the film was made in sections by separate people. Dallas Bower directed the prologue in England and set the style of it very well. The Wonderland section was made in France by Lou Bunin, who clearly had technical and budgetary problems, and then it was grafted on to the live section later on by someone else. So possibly we have a case of "too many cooks". |
However, for the confirmed "Alice" enthusiast it's still worth viewing, just be prepared for a large helping of poetic licence! There was a little publicity at the time, the picture left is the cover of a magazine called "Everybody's", a promotional poster is pictured above right and there's an interview and article from "Picturegoer" on the next page. The film has been released on video several times with at least three different sleeve designs.

| Since doing the review of the film, it's come to my attention that the copy in my possesion is actually rather shorter than it should be and is missing some scenes. For the record, therefore, the following are the extra scenes which appear in the full version, with thanks to Dave at WizrdInOz@aol.com. "I was reading your article on "Alice In Wonderland" movie starring Carol Marsh. I have this version on video and it does include the scene of Alice growing large in the White Rabbit's house. Afterwards, the Rabbit runs into the Queens guards and informs them that it was Alice who had started "The Great Flood" and that she had destroyed his house. Now we are back to Alice meeting the Caterpillar. They sing "You are old, Father William" then the Caterpillar departs. Not one but a large number of Fish Footmen approach with the Duchess' invitation. After a brief encounter with the Frog Footman who informs her that she can't go in, Alice grabs the invitation so she may present it to the Duchess herself, thus having a reason for going inside without intruding." |
