Alice In Wonderland video cover

"Painting the roses red"

tems from Disney's 'Alice' have always been highly collectible. Here are some examples of the artwork - individual 'cels' - used in the production.
There are usually 12 different frames per character per second (24 frames per second, each cel filmed twice). Each character is drawn on their own layer and the cells placed one on top of the other to create the illusion of several characters in the same shot.

Alice and the Queen (above) are therefore on separate transparent cels. Backgrounds are always on a separate layer and because, like the Mad Hatters' watch, they remain the same for such a long time, there are fewer of them. Often the cels offered for sale have a 'fake' painted background, note how the characters in the other examples are 'floating' with no shadows.
WE FADE TO GREY

In the Mad Hatters tea party sequence, the Hatter and the Hare decide to 'mend' the White Rabbit's watch.
After treating it with everything from butter to jam (not mustard of course - that would be silly!) the watch starts to fly around the table and the Hare swipes it with a large mallet. Just as the mallet hits, the colour fades from the scene.
Why? many have speculated but nobody knows for sure. One theory is that bits of the original print went missing and all they could find was a black and white insert. However, it's a gradual fade across several frames - not a quick cut from colour to black and white - which perhaps indicates it was a deliberate "effect".
