PUBLICITY - part two
next page

The film was only available in the cinema of course, until television gave it a fresh lease of life. Later still, home video gave a new generation a chance to see it. Early copies are very rare but here's a scan of the video cover (right) which reflects the design of the movie poster.
There hasn't been an official release on home video for many years but bootleg copies turn up on auction sites, it isn't difficult to find. Just don't believe the claims that it's "rare", "ultra rare" or even "hard to find" - sellers just say that to push the price up! $14.99 is the current going rate, don't be railroaded into paying much more. TCM have it in their library and I imagine they'll be showing it at intervals, so wait for one of those and get a crisp, bright copy for yourself!

BEHIND THE MASKS

Gary Cooper plays
"The White Knight"

W.C.Fields as Humpty Dumpty

Edna May Oliver plays "The Red Queen"

Alison Skipworth manages a smile, despite the gross facial appliance she has to wear in her role as the Duchess.
This publicity still is signed by the baby, Billy Barty ( who wasn't actually a baby of course ).
The Mad Hatter (Edward Everett Horton), complete with enormous top hat, leaps energetically across the tea table when Alice says she can answer the "writing desk" riddle.

This rather nice pose of Charlotte Henry with the White Rabbit (Skeets Gallagher) never happened in the film. Although Alice chases the Rabbit down the rabbit hole, unlike the story, she doesn't actually get to meet him.

Lobby cards were an essential in the quest for publicity. A selection would be displayed outside the cinema to advertise the film and lure potential patrons across the threshold.
