THE MUSIC SOUNDTRACK
next page

Dimitri TiomkinAlice In Wonderland - the music . . . was there a soundtrack album? None that I've been able to trace so far. Dimitri Tiomkin (right) wrote an extensive score, the incidental music runs almost without a break for the full length of the film, but there were no production numbers to speak of, apart from perhaps the "Queen Alice" song at the end. The Duchess bawls out "Speak Roughly To Your Little Boy", the Mock Turtle does his "Beautiful Soup" song and the Red Queen sings her lullabye, but they're "in context" as part of the original Carroll dialogue.
    THE SOUNDTRACK
Here are some selections from the film soundtrack itself. Just press "Play" for any selection which takes your fancy. Sound quality reflects the age of the source material!

The Paramount logo and the main title theme.

Alice climbs up to the mantlepiece and the mirror.

Beautiful Soup, Cary Grant never sounded better!

Surprisingly, RCA Victor produced the two records detailed below. The word "exploitation" might be applicable here, as the only links to the film these items have, are the pictures on them.
These admittedly rather amazing 78rpm picture discs are 10" in diameter, there are two of them in the set and each side carries a different picture montage from the film. Record numbers are RCA Victor No.17-4003 and No.17-4004.
The songs, seven in all, were written by H. Fraser-Simson and sung by George Baker with piano accompaniment. Each is a genuine 'Alice' song, such as "How Doth The Little Crocodile" and "Speak Roughly To Your Little Boy". However, despite the lavish photographs, none of the songs, the writer or the singer actually appear in the movie.
These picture discs went for $2000 on Ebay not too long ago. They're clearly very collectable but I hope the purchaser realised what he or she was(n't) getting - $2000 is a lot of money to pay for four photographs, nice though they are. Mind you, you don't pay $2000 for old fragile 78's and actually play them, now do you?

17-4003 side A has "How Doth The Little Crocodile" and "Fury, Said The Mouse" while side B has "Tis The Voice Of The Lobster" and "They Told Me You Had Been To Her".

17-4004 side A has "Speak Roughly To Your Little Boy" and "Won't You Walk A Little Faster", while side B has one song - "You Are Old, Father William".
