The Alice story traditionally begins with Alice sitting by her sister on the riverbank and falling asleep out of boredom. The film adds another layer by introducing the character of Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, who, with his friend Duckworth, is rowing the three Liddell sisters along the river to have a picnic. In this inspired addition to the usual story, we see a recreation of the fateful summer day, July 4th 1862, when the real Alice heard her story for the first time.

As the film titles fade, a rowing boat makes it's way towards the camera. Alice is steering the boat and the sisters call out for 'another story'. Dodgson laughs and says they have to wait until "Next time", and straight out of the poem which precedes the Alice story in the books, Alice says,"Ah, but it is next time."

They pick their picnic spot and alight from the boat. Later, Dodgson, played by Michael Jayston, begins to tell the story.

A (real) white rabbit runs by, scattering some playing cards, and Alice falls asleep as they fall in slow motion around her. We see a quick effects shot as the Queen card pulls a face when the rabbit steps on her.

Alice awakens to find herself alone amongst storybook long grass. She soon cheers up as she spots the White Rabbit consulting his watch, "Oh my ears and whiskers, I shall be too late!"

He runs into the rabbit hole, followed by Alice. She treads carefully, but finds herself falling straight downwards. "Either the well was very deep, or she fell very slowly, for she had plenty of time to look about her and to wonder what was going to happen next."
